What Are Oman’s Recent Economic Trends and Key Growth Opportunities?

Oman stands as a pivotal economy in the Middle East, with a nominal GDP of approximately USD 190.9 billion. While traditionally reliant on its oil sector, the nation has been actively diversifying its economic activities, emphasizing manufacturing, services, and tourism. Under the guidance of Oman Vision 2040, the country is implementing strategic reforms to enhance economic resilience, aiming to reduce its dependence on hydrocarbons and foster sustainable growth.

Recent GDP Growth Rate and Major Contributing Factors

In the first half of 2024, Oman’s economy expanded by 1.9% year-on-year, a slight acceleration from the 1.2% growth observed in 2023.This growth was primarily driven by the non-hydrocarbon sector, which saw a 3.8% increase during this period. Key contributors to this uptick included:

  • Manufacturing: The sector experienced a substantial real growth rate of 9.2% in Q1 2024, elevating its contribution to Oman’s GDP to 10%.

  • Construction and Services: Both sectors demonstrated robust performance, bolstering the overall economic landscape.

Current Inflation Rate, and Implications for the Economy

As of December 2024, Oman’s annual inflation rate stood at 0.7%, up from 0.5% in the previous month. This slight increase was mainly driven by higher prices in food and non-alcoholic beverages, health services, and clothing. Despite this uptick, inflation remains low, providing a stable environment for consumers and investors. The subdued inflationary pressures are attributed to the currency peg to the U.S. dollar and government measures to cap fuel prices.

Emerging Sector: Logistics and Maritime Shipping

The logistics and maritime shipping sector is rapidly gaining prominence in Oman. The government’s focus on leveraging Oman’s strategic geographical location has led to substantial investments in port infrastructure and shipping services.

A notable development is the planned initial public offering (IPO) of Asyad Shipping Company, a subsidiary of the state-owned Asyad Group. The company intends to sell at least 20% of its shares on the Muscat Stock Exchange, aiming to attract foreign investment and enhance fiscal stability. Asyad Shipping specializes in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, and other products, with major clients including BP and Shell.
